I watched Supersize Me during my freshman year of high school in health class and I was disgusted then, although it was super interesting and I really enjoyed it. I watched it yesterday, again, and was even more disgusted than last time. This is probably because, honestly, I eat more fast food then I should and McDonald's is probably the place I go to the most.

In the beginning of the movie, I obviously knew that Morgan eating McDonald's everyday was going to be a disaster for his body the day it started. I really didn't know it would get to the major extent it did though. The part that actually surprised me was that after eating McDonald's for only five days, Morgan literally became ill. He was in PAIN eating McDonald's and then for those of us who watched it, we saw him physically get sick in the McDonald's parking lot. I can guarantee that no one who decided to eat salad for 30 days would experience this terrible feeling in their body.
I watched this for the first time a long time ago and watching it again had an even bigger impact on wanting to deter me from eating McDonald's. As a freshman in high school, I didn't have access to a car or friends with cars so going to fast food restaurants frequently was not an issue. But, now that I can drive and am frequently traveling from school to work and back again, stopping for fast food is just easy. But this made me wonder how much better I might feel if I cut fast food out of my diet.
I think this is actually a really creative idea that Morgan Spurlock came up with for a documentary. He was willing to put himself at risk to help the mass public understand that these foods are causing problems for us that could be easily be avoided. He was interested in advocating for the greater good.

Okay on to something exciting! My niece started walking this week!!! YAY :)
Have a good weekend everyone!

ReplyDeleteI as well did the same documentary which makes it a lot easier to reflect on your post. The number one thing I would have to agree on with you is that as a young high schooler without a license, eating fast food was never really an issue. Now with being in college and having to go from class to work or wherever else it's so easy to run through a drive through somewhere and grab some food. McDonald's is usually my go to place when I'm in a hurry but doing this can be so harmful. Many other people out there do the same thing as well and we often don't realize or know just what we're putting into our bodies. As for your niece, I can totally understand why you wouldn't want her eating chicken nuggets anymore. I used to be obsessed with them as well as a little kid and I can't even imagine how many other kids out there constantly crave them. I believe you made a lot of good and relatable points in you reflection. Also, I'm glad to hear your niece started waking! That's really exciting! :)
I also watched SuperSizeMe as my documentary to view. I completely agree with everything you stated above. I too feel that many other people should watch this film to build awareness to what they are truly consuming from McDonalds. Despite the eleven year difference between then and now I believe that this film still has information relevant to the present day person. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI also watched the same documentary and thought exactly what you thought! I thought it was a really interesting idea to take on this experiment Morgan had in mind. It had actually showed me what would happen and think everyone should watch this at one point in their lives. And I must agree I do eat fast food more than I should and try to stop but hey, if I am on the road and need something to eat they are everywhere! So I do understand why people eat it, but everyday, I think they should cut it down then. You did a really good describing the movie to everyone and the layout you had was very good! Congrats for your niece too!!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a lot of people watched this as their documentary. After reading your reflection, this seems like a very cool documentary to watch. You included a lot of facts about the film and also included the way you felt. It still shocks me that a person would do this to himself just to prove a point about the fast food industry. I personally don't eat a lot of fast food but I know a lot of people who do. Therefore, it is important that this topic is covered. I am looking forward to watching it soon!
ReplyDeleteI also watched this movie freshman year for health class and it had the same affect on me. Morgan Spurlock really put himself through a lot to prove the point that frequently eating fast food has negative health affects. Although fast food is bad for you, it is extremely convenient when in a hurry or when on a lunch break at work. The consumer has to trade convenience with eating healthy food.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in that in high school it was much harder to go to fast food restaurants now we are in college and some of us get fast food often because we are always on the go. And I agree that McDonalds is usually the to go place, sadly. I honestly don't know what kid isn't obsessed with their chicken nuggets, I'm not going to lie I actually like them a lot too. After reading all the reflections you all had to say about this documentary I don't know how I feel about eating McDonalds, I most likely wont stop eating it but I for sure wont eat it too often.
